So If the Redskins Changed Their Name, What Should the New Name Be?

On Sunday evening, NBC sports broadcaster Bob Costas entered the Washington Redskins name controversy by giving a halftime commentary during the Redskins versus the Dallas Cowboys matchup.

Costas said via FoxNews.com, “Think for a moment about the term ‘Redskins’ and how it truly differs from [other team nicknames based on Native American images]. Ask yourself what the equivalent would be, if directed [at] African-Americans. Hispanics. Asians. Or members of any other ethnic group. When considered that way, ‘Redskins’ can’t possibly honor a heritage, or a noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term.

He added, “It is an insult, a slur, no matter now benign the present-day intent.”

While the Washington Redskins name has been a topic of conversation for awhile, these recent remarks come on the heels of President Barack Obama’s statement earlier this month that if he were the team’s owner, he would “think about” a name change.

Good luck Mr. President as Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has been sticking to his guns that he’d never change it, saying back in May via USA Today, “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use caps.”

But after Obama’s remarks, Snyder did send a letter to the team’s season ticket holders and wrote that the Redskins’ name was “never a label. It was, and continues to be, a badge of honor.” He then added, “I respect the feelings of those who are offended by the team name. But I hope such individuals also try to respect what the name means, not only for all of us in the extended Washington Redskins family, but among Native Americans too.”

While it appears Snyder will not be changing the name any time soon, let’s imagine a change will come at some point. What are some possible new ones?

Arizonacentral.com’s Bob Young offered these suggestions:

Warriors: Snyder supposedly has a registered a trademark called “Washington Warriors” back when he was pondering an Arena League team. This name has support by fans.

Braves: This was the Redskins’ original name from its Boston days. This is a big throwback but the name Braves as well as Warriors will likely not gather support for those opposed to Native American references for sports teams.

’Skins: Really, just getting rid of “Red” would make people happy? Doubt it.

Other suggestions have included the following:

Washington Pigskins: This has been a somewhat popular suggestion and could fall under the desired shortened nick name of  ‘Skins. A similar derivation is the Washington Hogs or Washington Red Hogs.

A possible D.C. reference such as Monuments, Justice, Congress, Districts and Metros–to name a few. But none of these sound that great.

Washington Renegades: As noted by USA Today, are the Redskins switching to the XFL?

And to keep it simple, the Americans.

What do you think, any name suggestions?
